Devlog 4: Trash town
Hey everyone,
This week we focussed on the implementation of important mechanics to our game as well as making the first version of our trashy town.
Let's take a quick look at what we have been up to this week.
Teams
Players will be able to swap teams. When they deposit trash, the trash score will be added to their team score
Trash
Of course, there can’t be “Trash Racoons” without any trash. Players are now able to collect trash and deliver it to a drop-off point. This allows players to score the trash they’re carrying for their team.
Dash
A player is now able to dash, a quick movement in a certain direction. By dashing into another player you can remove the trash this player is carrying and then pick it up for yourself. This means that players are now able to steal trash from each other.
Houses
This week we got around to making houses with the House toolbox we created, as seen in our second devlog.
With this toolbox, we created 7 different houses for the residents of our city, each a bit different from the rest.
As you can see in the pictures below, all the houses have the same colors for the roof for example. This is because inside 3dsMax we pre-assigned materials to different parts of the houses that we knew we wanted to switch up color-wise. This way we could make a new material with the desired colors and roughness inside our Unity project and drag and drop it onto the mesh we want to colorize (see GIF).
The current set of colors for houses and props
Burger joint
When you’re feeling hungry after your trash hoarding route you can always stop for a delicious, trashy burger at our new burger joint.
Town
Our town now has a first block-out which we will use to test our game in and improve upon, the current town is meant to go in a circle so the game ends right where you started so you are ready to jump right back into the action.
currently, our garbage truck is already able to drive along the streets of the town while trash spawns all over the place for you to collect.
Props
In the picture below you can see all the trash we have made so far, ready for collection!
We made sure our trash is big enough for everyone to see so you can easily spot it in the environment. But beating your opponent to the trash is all you! We can’t help with that.
And of course what is trash without a garbage truck to collect it in.
Garbagetruck movement is now complete with the truck being able to do smooth rotations.
Characters
We’re also happy to show you the current character model for you to play during your match. May their cute face help you on your way to becoming king of the hill, or should I say trash yard?
Controls
In the visual representation on the right, you can see the current controls available in the current build. This means we are still working hard to implement all the controls that we are planning on doing, but for the time being, feel free to try out the current controls to your heart’s content :)
along with this update, there is a new build for you to play.
that is all to report for this week,
Cya later fellow trash pandas.
